Ahmad Khan Rahami Charged In New York, New Jersey Bombings

Copyright 2016 NPR. To see more, visit SHAPIRO, HOST: The federal government is charging Ahmad Khan Rahami in connection with the weekend bombings in New York and New Jersey. Until now Rahami had been held on New Jersey state charges of attempting to kill law enforcement officers in a shootout as they closed in to arrest him. NPR's Dina Temple-Raston is on the line to talk with us about the federal charges as well as new details on the investigation that may provide some insight into the motive behind the attacks. And Dina, first, what are the new charges? DINA TEMPLE-RASTON, BYLINE: The new charges are federal - the use and attempt to use weapons of mass destruction, bombing a public place, destruction of property by means of explosives and using a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence. And these are probably only the first federal charges - so a placeholder. Sources tell us there will likely be terrorism charges coming, too. SHAPIRO: And the criminal complaint also
